Hawaiian Phrase of the Week: Malama kekahi i kekahi

We have had a rough couple of years thanks to COVID. At the beginning of the pandemic, with all the uncertainty, the one thing that stood out to me was the willingness for ‘malama kekahi i kekahi’ (pronounced: mah-lah-mah keh-kah-hee ee keh-kah-hee). We saw people helping each other purchase groceries, run errands…everyone helping to protect those who were at most risk of contracting the virus.

As we start to learn how to live with the pandemic, it seems we are starting to forget to malama kekahi i kekahi. I truly believe that the world, which admittedly is a little chaotic right now, would benefit if we would remember to malama kekahi i kekahi. Because if we don’t malama kekahi i kekahi, then who will?
