Hawaiian Word of the Week: Moana

Moana (pronounced: moh-AH-nah) isn’t just a Disney movie…it is the Hawaiian word for ‘ocean’. For many of us, moana is a place for us to play (carefully as moana can be dangerous) or to relax. But for native Hawaiians, moana has a much deeper meaning.

Moana played an important role for native Hawaiians: it was used for physical (and spiritual) sustenance and acted as a vital resource for them. Hawaiians believe that there is a balance between moana and the ‘aina (land).

Moana has come to symbolize power and strength, chaos and peace. We fear the ferocity of the ocean but appreciate the sense of calm it can offer our souls.
