Hawaiian Phrase of the Week: Aloha 'aina

Wailua River, Kauai.

We use the word ‘aloha’ for many meanings when we are on the islands. But ‘aloha’ really means love. Love for each other and when we show ‘aloha aina’ (pronounced: ah-loh-hah eye-nah) we are showing love for the land.

Hawaiian culture is deep with spiritual connections to both people and the land. One of the reasons we all love Hawaii so much is because of that connection and we, as tourists, get to reap the benefits of the sweeping scenery that is unique to the islands. We all know that when we are in Hawaii, we must respect the land, not taking from the islands. And if you are of my generation, you might have the slight fear (like me) of taking anything from Hawaiian land thanks to the “Brady Bunch” episode in Hawaii.

The land is nourishing and takes care of us. In a time where, here on the mainland, we are seeing more and more development happening, we need to remember that the land has given us so much and we need to give back and take care of it as it has taken care of us.
