Hawaiian Word of the Week: Ho'okahi wale no

I don’t know about you, but sometimes, I just feel the need to be ho’okahi wale nō (pronunciation: ho-oh-kah-hee vah-leh noh) or alone. As a painful introvert, spending time ho’okahi wale nō is my way to recharge my batteries to be able to deal with what the universe decides to throw at me.

But, I recognize there is difference between ho’okahi wale nō and mehameha (loneliness). Many people feel the need to be ho’okahi wale nō but are not lonely. There are others that feel lonely yet are never ho’okahi wale nō. But in my experience, it can be a fine line. Spending too much time ho’okahi wale nō can lead to loneliness. And I always try to make sure I know that point where it might turn into loneliness. And recognizing that for myself, I do my best to recognize that in others I am around…so I know if I can somehow help them.

Do you like to be ho’okahi wale nō? What do you do to recharge your batteries?
