Hawaiian Word of the Week: Halau

Halau-01.jpg

Since the 56th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo kicks off in just a few weeks, this month’s Mindful Monday posts are dedicated to the art of hula.

Hula is taught in schools called halau [hah-lao]. Ha means breath and lau means many. Together, you breathe as one. The sense of community that is fostered from moving as one is what I miss most from my dancing days. I am eager to get back to it and join a halau. So if you know of one in the Bay Area, let me know!

Check back next week for more on hula and its two forms.
