Hawaiian Word of the Week: hānau

For many people today is Christmas Day, marking the hānau (pronounced: haah-now), or birth, of Jesus Christ. For me, today will be all about the 3 “Fs” : family, friends, and (definitely) food.

But it is around the Winter Solstice that I think about the next 2 weeks ahead: Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Both days center around the idea of ‘birth’ and new beginnings and I start to think about what that looks like for me.

I’m very, very aware these days that my years of a new hānau for me are limited. It makes me think how I can be more impactful to my family, friends, community and even to myself. What haven’t I done yet that I want to do this year? How can I better myself? I spend the last few weeks of the year thinking about all this.

What do you think about when you think about a new hānau for yourself this time of year?

Wishing you and your family a Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)!
