Hawaiian Phrase of the Week: Na ho'omaka hou

Now that we are a few days into the new year, I keep hearing more and more about everyone’s ‘new year’s resolutions’. I personally have never been able to keep a resolution past the first two weeks of the year so I have shifted my thinking to consider this time of year as an opportunity for new beginnings, or nā ho’omaka hou (pronounced: na-ah hoh-mah-kah ho) in Hawaiian.

Maybe I am odd but there is a shift in my thinking the minute the clock strikes midnight on January 1. I reflect a bit on what happened the previous year…. the good and the bad that may have happened. When the bad is happening, it feels awful but come January 1, I realize how much stronger that experience has made me. And I go into the new year feeling a bit like  a superhero!
