Hawaiian Word of the Week: Keiki

A dog patiently waits as his keiki frolic in the ocean.

Summer has arrived and the keiki (pronounced: kay-kee), or children, are out of school for a few months.

I remember the feeling I would have on the last day of school. The anticipation would build with ½ day schools days the week we would be released for the summer. And on that final day, where absolutely no schoolwork was done, hundreds of children at my school were sprung into a world of the fun of camps, friends, and Hawaii.

I am always amazed by keiki in Hawaii….they are so active playing sports when I drive by a park or at the beach surfing and just playing in the water. The pure joy they feel is something I try to emulate now I have the adult things that don’t always make you feel so “free”.

How are you like keiki? How do you feel that same freedom that keiki feel when school ends?
