Hawaiian Word of the Week: hau'oli

View of Diamondhead on Oahu from airplane upon descent into Honolulu International Airport.

So…who is going to Hawaii soon? If you are anything like me, the excitement, or “hau’oli” (pronounced: how-oh-lee) of planning my trip is half of the fun (of course the other half is actually being in Hawaii).

Let’s do a little visual exercise here: Close your eyes…you are on a plane en route to your favorite place in Hawaii. You are on the final descent and as you look out the airplane window, you see land…your destination…paradise….Hawaii.

That, for me, is when I feel the most hau’oli. Knowing that I am finally in the place where I want to be. The overwhelming sense of joy of the breathtaking views. I instantly feel my shoulders descend from my ears.

What makes you feel a strong sense of hau’oli?
