Favorite Recipes from Kauai

If you received a Lives Aloha kit this month, one of the featured recipes was Chocolate Truffles with Black Lava Hawaiian Sea Salt from the Aloha Spice company. Our kit included their refillable Black Lava salt grinder. I’ve been guilty of buying the disposable grinders from Trader Joe’s and was super happy to find a way to be more sustainable and yet still enjoy gourmet salt.

The Aloha Spice company is so much more than salt. When we found ourselves unexpectedly cooking a turkey for Thanksgiving, we opted for The Aloha Spice Company Chicken and Pork Seasoning.

A Bloody Mary during Sunday Football is a favorite of mine. Thankfully, @HeLivesAloha knows how to make a good one. Rimming the glass with the Black Lava salt is optional.

Pau Hana Bloody Mary*

2oz Pau vodka

4-6oz V8 juice

1 tsp horseradish

1/2 tsp fresh lime juice

4 dashes Tabasco sauce

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

1 pinch celery salt

Pour all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 10-20 seconds. Strain over ice into a Collins glass. Garnish with green olives, celery stalk. For a tropical twist, add some pineapple and pickled onion to the garnish.

This Superbowl Sunday I am looking forward to making Deviled Eggs with Aunty Lillikoi’s Passionfruit Wasabi Mustard. What I love about this mustard is that the wasabi is subtle and provides just the right amount of spice. It will also bring zing to any hot dog, just like the famous Puka Dogs on Kauai.
